Chatham Borough Environmental Commission - FAQ

Below is more information on other environmental programs and services available to residents of Chatham Borough:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazardous Substances

The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority has constructed a facility in western Morris County that will allow residents and Conditionally-Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQGs) to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste. The facility is available on an appointment only basis on most Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Call (973) 829-8006 to make an appointment.

Acceptable Household Hazardous Waste

Pesticides and Herbicides
Oil-based Paints, Stains and Varnishes
Automotive Fluids: Antifreeze, Motor Oil, Gasoline, Transmission, Steering and Brake Fluids
Batteries
Pool and Darkroom Chemicals
Small Quantities of Asbestos (up to 100 lbs, double bagged, wetted and sealed)
Driveway Sealant
Roofing Tar
Propane Cylinders
Fluorescent Light Bulbs and Ballasts
Unacceptable Household Hazardous Waste:

Latex Paints: These are not hazardous and should be dried out and disposed of with regular trash.
Empty Containers: Once a container is empty, it is no longer hazardous and should be disposed of with the recyclables or trash in the normal manner.
Unknown materials: If unlabeled or unidentifiable, the waste may or may not be acceptable depending upon its physical characteristics. Call for more information.
Over 220 lbs of Business Waste: Large quantity hazardous waste generators cannot participate in the MCMUA's HHW program.

Recycling

Chatham Borough has a nationally recognized recycling program. The recycling rules can be found in the Borough Calendar distributed to all residents, and are summarized below. Recyclables are picked up from curbside every other Monday (see Calendar for dates), or can be dropped off at the Recycling Depot on Saturdays from 9 AM to 12 PM.

What can be recycled:

Newspapers (tied or placed in brown paper bags);

Cardboard and brown bags (flattened, tied or placed in brown paper bags)

Mixed paper (mail, magazines, paperback books, wrapping paper, milk and juice cartons)

Jars, cans and bottles (bottles, cans, aluminum foil, plastics with a 1 or 2 recycling symbol)

Household batteries

Please note:

Computers cannot be recycled via the Borough recycling program. The Environmental Commission recommends donation of used computers or recycling via Back to the Future Micro Computers, (973) 884-2282.

Styrofoam cannot be recycled via the Borough recycling program. The Environmental Commission suggests donation of Styrofoam packing "peanuts" to professional mailing establishments. All other Styrofoam items should be disposed of in the trash.

Not all plastics are recyclable. Please check the bottom of the item for the recycling symbol "1" or "2" - only these items can be recycled. Some of the plastic items that are not recyclable include berry and salad bar containers, bakery cake covers, and flowerpots. Nonrecyclable plastics may be placed in the trash or in a container for bulk pickup.

Plastic bags cannot be recycled via the Borough recycling programs. Check area supermarkets for plastic bag recycling receptacles.

Please clean your recyclables! Leaving food and food residue in recyclable containers is unsanitary and hinders the recycling process. The Borough pays for removal of recyclables by volume, not by weight, so please flatten your recyclables before depositing them at the Recycling Depot.

**Detection of non-recyclable items in the Borough recycling loads may cause the entire load to be rejected by the recycling company. The load would then be considered trash and would be dumped in a landfill. Not only is this bad for the environment, it would result in a tipping fee being charged back to the Borough to be paid by your taxes! Please only recycle items approved for recycling in the Borough program. **

The Environmental Commission thanks you for recycling and for being considerate when preparing and dropping off your recyclables.
