Master Plan Update

What is a Master Plan?

What is a Master Plan?

A Master Plan is a Borough-wide policy document that outlines the vision for the community's growth, development and preservation.

Why is Chatham updating its Master Plan now?

Under New Jersey law, municipalities are required to re-examine their master plans every 10 years. Chatham's last Master Plan re-examination was adopted in 2006. Because the Borough had not fully updated its Master Plan since 2000, the Planning Board decided to take a somewhat more detailed look at existing conditions, issues and opportunities than was done in 2006.

Who is responsible for preparing the Master Plan?

The Planning Board prepares and adopts the Master Plan. A subcommittee of Planning Board members has been established to guide the update process. Input from the Borough Council and the public will also be an important part of the process.

What are the expected outcomes of the Master Plan update?

As a policy document, the Master Plan is NOT a law, regulation or detailed analysis. However, it will make recommendations that the Planning Board and Borough Council can use to undertake future regulatory changes or studies. For example, the Master Plan may recommend future zoning changes that the Planning Board could prepare and submit to the Council for potential adoption. Or the Master Plan could identify traffic issues that should be studied in detail.

How can I be involved in the update?

Visit this site for updates and posting of Plan materials. The Planning Board will be developing an online survey in late March/early April. And a second community workshop will be held in the late spring.

The Planning Board will conduct a public hearing on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 7:30pm in Borough Hall, Council Chambers, upper level, 54 Fairmount Street, Chatham, NJ to consider the Borough of Chatham's 2016 Master Plan Reexamination & Update Report. Any interested may attend the public hearing and will be afforded the opportunity to be heard. Formal action may be taken by the Planning Board following the public hearing. A copy of the 2016 Master Plan Reexamination & Update Report is available on the link below.
