Chatham Borough Council to Hear about Affordable Housing, Redevelopment Issues on Monday

The Chatham Borough Council meeting on Monday, March 11 will include a presentation from the Borough’s Planners regarding next steps on affordable housing and potential redevelopment options.

“We know this is a hot topic in town and want to make sure residents stay in the loop,” said Mayor Carolyn Dempsey.

The Borough’s planner, Kendra Lelie, and Redevelopment Planner, Francis Reiner, will be making the presentation. They will discuss the Borough’s current affordable housing obligations and give a status update on meeting these obligations.

As part of this conversation, the planners will discuss what may occur in the River Road area over the next few years, as well as how this may fit in with the Borough’s current and future affordable housing obligations.

“I know there have been lots of rumors swirling around the River Road area and want to reassure residents that this is an introduction to what will be an extensive conversation,” said Council President Jocelyn Mathiasen. “As a Council, we cannot stop development from happening, so the question is whether we can or should try to shape what does occur.”

“Being prepared and proactive is the best way for the Borough to make sure that they can make good, thoughtful decisions” said Lelie. She stressed, “this presentation is purely informational, to get the Council and the public up to speed.”

The Council meeting will be on March 11, 2024, at 7:30 pm. The meeting can be streamed live on zoom or attended in person at 54 Fairmount Avenue, Chatham Borough.
